Disabling the "Shutdown Worker Process after being idle" Option in IIS

This article describes a method for improving the performance of Workgroups Portal.

PROBLEM

After extended periods of inactivity, Workgroups Portal may seem slow to load pages.

CAUSE

The Windows process that runs Workgroups Portal is called w3wp.exe. The default settings in Internet Information Services on Windows Server 2003 are to recycle w3wp.exe if it has been idle for 20 minutes. When this process is recycled, it reloads the application and subsequently all DLLs needed for this page, which can cause a temporary slowdown.

RESOLUTION

To remove the Idle Timeout setting, perform the following steps:

  1. Open the Internet Information Services Manager. (Start>Programs>Administrative Tools)
  2. Right-click Application Pools and choose Properties.
  3. Click the Performance tab.
  4. Uncheck the option in the Idle Timeout section, Shutdown Worker Process after being idle for (time in minutes):
  5. Restart IIS.
